Breville BOV800XL
Attractively housed in reinforced stainless steel, this 1800-watt convection toaster oven features a 4/5-cubic-foot nonstick interior and Element IQ technology, which provides smarter control over the heat. Choose from nine pre-set functions: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, or Warm; each one comes with its own pre-programmed temperature and cooking time, eliminating the guesswork. The unit's broil function activates just the top heating elements to melt and brown food; its toast function activates the top and bottom heating elements to seal and crisp; and the bake function uses both the top and bottom heating elements, as well as the convection fan, to ensure thorough cooking, inside and out. Instead of the oven's five quartz heating elements having a fixed wattage, however, Element IQ functions much like a dimmer on a light switch, increasing or decreasing the power with a simple turn of the knob. The time and temperature for the pre-set programs can easily be adjusted to accommodate individual preferences--the oven will even remember the new settings for next time.
Thoughtfully designed, the oven's push-button and turn-knob control panel, as well as its blue back-lit LCD screen, makes it effortless to operate the unit and to see the current function, temperature, and adjusts made. Other highlights include fast heat-up times, energy-efficient operation, three rack positions, a wire rack that ejects automatically halfway out of the oven for safe removal of hot items, an embossed and ribbed top surface that can be used as a warming tray, and a front-access removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Combining durable materials and powerful performance with a strikingly modern design, users will want to leave the oven out on display and conveniently accessible for everyday use. Accessories include a 13-inch non-stick pizza pan, a 12-by-12-inch enamel baking pan, and a 12-by-12-inch enamel broil rack. The oven measures 18-1/2 by 12-1/2 by 10-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven Reviews
The "Apple" of convection ovens, December 29, 2008
By S. Peterson "theswedishchef" (Santa Rosa, CA)
I'm a fan of all things Mac so I often use my admiration for Apple as a reference for reviewing products. First, the Breville BOV800XL package arrived today without a dent. It ships in a Breville box (be careful it you ship it as a surprise) inside another box. It is very well packed so there was no damage. Unboxing the oven reminded me of unpacking an Apple product. They really want you to feel that you have just purchased something great. The box is no ordinary convection oven box. But you don't buy an oven because of the box, right? I've posted a photo of what comes with the oven. You get a crumb tray, a wire rack, a two-piece broiler pan and a non-stick pizza pan. That's a good amount of extra stuff. Note that Breville recommends that the broiler pan not go in the dishwasher as it is enamel coated so it's going to take some elbow grease.
This is my third convection oven, My first was a Black and Decker. It was terrible but I bought it before Al Gore invented the internet so there were no reviews to read. The second was a top-rated Cuisinart. The controls on the Cuisinart cracked, warped, toasted and ceased functioning after a year. So I was very excited to get an oven with sturdy knobs and a stainless steel front. Many reviewers have noted the magnetic wire rack device. It's not rocket science. They put two magnets in the door that grab the wire rack when it is in the middle slot. That's the only slot in which the magnets work. It is a nice feature.
I baked a California Pizza Kitchen pizza. It turned out great. These pizzas, although delicious, are notoriously messy. They tend to drip grease and cheese. It did get a little smokey when the drippings hit the bottom elements. The design of the crumb tray catches all this junk for easy clean-up. You won't have to scrub junk off the bottom of the inside of the oven because the bottom pulls out and goes right into the sink.
The next test was toast. Although it's best to use an actual toaster for toast, this oven did a much better job toasting bread than my other ovens, especially the Cuisinart. I started with two slices of sourdough placed in the center. I posted a photo showing you the results. Please note that I flipped over the piece on the right showing you the bottom. It actually turned out better than either of my previous ovens. However, it took over 5 minutes to get this result so it's not quick. But if you get upset waiting over five minutes for toast, then you have other problems.
The top of the oven does get warm, which will come in handy as a food warmer. The handle is sturdy. I appreciate that it does not connect to the front glass.
The electronic controls are very intuitive (like an iPhone) and easy to use. The computer sensor inside seems to work as advertised. This next point is minor but the electrical cord is rather short. The plug-in is a unique design that sticks out farther from the wall than most cords. This might be bad if you have limited counter space and the outlet you're using is directly behind the oven. It sticks straight out of the wall by about four inches. I'm not sure why they designed it that way but for some people this might be a frustration.
What I cannot tell you is how this Breville BOV800XL oven will perform over the months and years ahead. I am hoping that this oven will outperform the expensive Cuisinart. I'll revise this review this summer after we've used it for a while.
Overall, I'm very impressed with this oven. Breville seems to have done some great research on convection ovens. It will be interesting to see how Consumer Reports and the folks at America's Test Kitchen will rate this oven in the future. I'm guessing it will do very well.
Great Oven, September 13, 2009

First of all I have owned Black and Decker, Euro pro, Hamilton Beach and Rival convection ovens. So here is my review on the Breville Smart oven.
The first thing I will mention, on pass Breville BOV800XL review, some people say the directions say not to use tin foil or glass....Obviously these people can't read or don't understand. The book states clearly use only oven proof glass. That's the glass you buy for use in your oven. No one I Know of ever put a glass of water or coffee in a convection or toaster oven for that matter.
The second thing is the tin foil. It is perfectly fine to put tin foil on top of any pan or OVEN proof glass in this oven. The direction just say please don't rap the tin foil around the heating element.
The third thing is I have used both with no problems what so ever.
The 4th Thing is read the positive reviews of this Breville oven. This is the best Convection oven out there.
Do you know how I know that? Because when you click the button on you can hear the convection..
I'm not a member of the grape vine thing, just a straight shooter and no one paid me for this review.

Amazing little appliance!, February 24, 2010
By Kathy Sheets "an ordinary girl" (Florida)
Thr Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven is my favorite appliance of all I've ever owned. I needed a new toaster oven and almost overlooked this one because of the price. I figured I had a full-sized convection oven so why would I want to pay over $200 for this? Then I saw it in Bed Bath & Beyond ($250 orig, used a 20% off coupon, got it for $200 plus tax) and realized it wasn't as massive (and it's nice looking!) as I thought it was going to be based on the description. Since reviews were so positive, I decided to take a chance. The first one we brought home had a defect in the LED lights on the display panel so we took it back and exchanged it. This one is perfect. I love to use it to bake potatoes and sweet potatoes in and also fish. It makes PERFECT toast. None of that striped or only toasted-in-one-spot appearance that I have experienced with other toaster ovens. I have not yet made pizza, but am looking forward to trying it out. The pizza pan and other pieces are great, too. This is the perfect appliance for anyone, whether you have a small or large kitchen. I love it for when I don't need the space of a full oven. I also have made use of the top as a warming area for plates which is nice. Some reviewers have complained of not being able to use glass or foil in the oven. The pamphlet included with ours said to use only oven-safe glass and when using foil to be sure that no foil touches the heating elements. I have used both oven-safe dishes and foil without problem. If you're on the fence about this, I urge you to get off that fence and get this great appliance. You'll love it!
not your typical "toaster oven", May 6, 2010

I've had this Breville BOV800XL oven for about 5 months now and I must admit that I absolutely love it! I have only turned on my full sized oven once since I got it (for something larger than this will hold). I use it almost daily and am looking forward to not heating my whole apartment this summer when I want to bake something.
It's easy to clean, and while it takes up more space on the counter than I'd hoped, it really does more than I imagined it would. I love that it signals when the preheat is done and shuts off when the cooking time is done. I also like that you can adjust the cooking time if you think it needs more or less.
It does require quite a bit of power, so I wouldn't plug anything else into the same outlet while using this, it may be dangerous to do so (but i think it says that in the manual).
The one thing that can be improved on future models is to have the LCD turn off quicker, this thing stays lit up for what seems like an eternity and sometimes you think it is still on because of that.
I would buy this again.
Used Daily, a Great Purchase, March 12, 2010
By kdea473
I received this as a gift last year, after much hinting (looking at it in the store, browsing on Amazon). The purchaser bought it from Amazon (much cheaper than the fancy kitchen store where we had been admiring it in person).
I have been thrilled with this oven, and have used it pretty much every day. My favorite things about it are:
*Warms up very quickly, within about 2 minutes to a temp of 350, which speeds up food prep time considerably
*Has lots of relevant pre-sets (guess that's part of why it's a Smart Oven); we use the toast, bagel, and pizza ones regularly
*Convection feature cooks much faster and more evenly (especially frozen foods, which tend to cook in 1/2 the time)
*Neat magnetic feature that pulls out metal rack (protecting fingers)
The oven perfectly fits a 12" frozen pizza, and I sometimes use the oven to make a hands-free grilled cheese sandwich (two slices of bread with cheese in the center, push "toast" and within 4 minutes, a perfect sandwich). The oven is large enough that you could easily lay out 6 slices of toast or 6 bagel halves.
We keep the toaster oven unplugged when not in use, which leads to a very loud "beep, beep" when it is plugged in (annoying when you want to make early-morning toast while others are sleeping). The oven also gets very hot on the outside (which the salesman at the fancy kitchen store erroneously told us would not happen). I'm here this week to pick up the coordinating Breville Smart Oven Cutting Board and Serving Tray BOV800CB to put on top.
This was my first-ever toaster oven, and while I believe in buying quality kitchen products (they make cooking so much easier and more fun), I'll admit I cringed a bit at the price tag. It seems to be worth every penny, and I'd recommend it to anyone who was considering it.
